Christmas in April Searching for Volunteers

ELKTON — Christmas in April Cecil County is hoping to find local churches or other organizations looking for opportunities to volunteer this summer.

The organization, which offers free home repairs to low-income or disabled homeowners the last Saturday in April, had an overwhelming number of requests for help and still has projects that need attention, according to Bob Alcorn, president of the non-profit.

“We did 20 on April 24,” Alcorn said Wednesday. “We have about 33 left over.”

CIA*CC typically finds its support from churches, but companies, offices, and organizations also come together to tackle such projects as ramp construction, roof repairs, and window replacements.

“We focus on safety issues,” he said.

Alcorn said the group has some resources that provide materials. A handful of fundraisers provide what the volunteer groups can’t.

However, Alcorn said, the board of directors is in a bind.

“Our biggest need right now is our website has not been updated in 12 years,” Alcorn said. “We need to make it more user-friendly.”

Not only are the photos sadly out of date, but also Alcorn said the ability to interact is not there.

“We have the applications in every (Cecil County Public) library. We want to have the apps online,” he said.

While he has help from some tech-savvy friends of the organization who have offered to cut their service costs by 55 percent, that bill is still going to be high.

“It’s going to be over $10,000 to upgrade,” he said. “We don’t want to spend that ... and take away from our ability to help homeowners in need.”

Alcorn considered grants, but admits he has never written one before. One alternative the board is pondering is splitting the cost over two budget years.

“If we can get donations or grants we can get it done,” he said, adding the goal from there would be to maintain that the site’s history is not repeated.

“Then we’ll only have to pay a minimal charge to update,” he said.
